Moses “Shyne” Barrow, once a rising star at Bad Boy Records, is sharing his perspective in a new Hulu documentary, The Honorable Shyne, which premieres on November 18. In the doc, Shyne reflects on his early career, the 1999 nightclub shooting that led to his conviction, and how his life changed after prison. He also talks about what he believes was a betrayal by Sean “Diddy” Combs, his former mentor, during the legal battle that followed the shooting.
The documentary’s trailer opens with Shyne remembering his early days in the music industry. He recalls how “everybody that heard me wanted to sign me,” before ultimately landing a deal with Diddy’s Bad Boy Records at just 20 years old. His hit “Bad Boyz” quickly made him a name in hip-hop, but his career was cut short after the Manhattan nightclub incident that left three people injured.
Shyne was convicted of first-degree assault, while Diddy, who was also present, was acquitted of felony gun charges. In the documentary, Shyne suggests that he was unfairly blamed for the incident, saying, “I was absolutely set up to be the fall guy.” His mother, Frances Myvette, adds that her son was “betrayed.”
During Diddy’s trial, which lasted through 2001, he maintained that he had no involvement in the shooting. “Under no circumstances did I have anything to do with a shooting,” Diddy said at the time. He was eventually acquitted, but Shyne received a lengthy prison sentence.
Reflecting on that time in his life, Shyne has been open about feeling abandoned by Diddy, saying in a recent press conference, “When I was an 18-year-old kid, just wanting to make my mother proud, I was defending him and he turned around and called witnesses to testify against me.” Despite this, Shyne explains that he’s moved on from the past.
After serving his sentence, Shyne was deported to his home country of Belize, where he embraced a new path in politics and public service. Now a prominent figure in Belize, Shyne serves as the Leader of the Opposition in the Belize House of Representatives and is the country’s Music and Goodwill Ambassador.
The relationship between Shyne and Diddy has remained complicated. In 2023, the two appeared together at a charity concert in London, performing Shyne’s hits “Bad Boyz” and “Bonnie & Shyne.” However, Shyne describes their relationship as distant. “This is someone who destroyed my life, and who I forgave, and who I moved on,” Shyne says in the documentary. He also notes that while he tried to maintain some level of communication for the benefit of Belize, the relationship was far from personal.
Diddy, meanwhile, is currently facing serious legal issues. He was recently arrested on charges related to sex trafficking and racketeering. Although he has pleaded not guilty, he is being held without bail while awaiting trial.
