Many celebrities have stans, or ride-or-die fans that support them no matter what, but what happens when a stan becomes a stalker?
Singer, Ashanti took the stand in a New York courtroom Tuesday to face her convicted stalker, 36-year-old, Devar Hurd. The “Foolish” singer accused Hurd of harassing her and her family since 2009.
Hurd has sent countless numbers of X-rated photos and obscene messages to Ashanti, her mother and sister via Twitter. The New York Daily News reports, Hurd spent two years behind bars for the 2009 offenses, but the harassment started up again in 2013 after he violated the court’s order not to contact Ashanti or her family.
“I was extremely scared and nervous. I had no idea what he was capable of. I felt unsafe,” said Ashanti, before telling the jury about the perverted tweets from Hurd in July of 2013.
Hurd’s only defense was, “I simply had non-violent, non-threatening written communication on a site made just for socializing…She has the ability to stop me if she wants to, hit the block button.”
Since Hurd decided to act as his own lawyer, he was granted the permission to question the star in a cross-examination.
“Wassup Shani… everything good?” he asked during questioning. “How’s ‘Army Wives’ going? Are you still acting on that show?”
Hurd was shot down repeatedly by the judge for asking irrelevant questions. Ashanti’s mother, Tina Douglas and sister, Kenashia Douglas were also subjected to cross-examinations.
“It was horrible,” said Ashanti as she exited the courthouse Tuesday. The case is set to continue today.
