Singer Duffy Opens Up About Her Abduction & Rape That Caused Her To Withdraw From The Spotlight; ‘I Do Not Know How I Had The Strength To Endure Those Days’

Grammy award-winning singer Duffy, the pop star behind hits “Mercy,” “Well, Well, Well” and “Rain on Your Parade,” has opened up for the first time in a lengthy post on her website about her drugging, abduction, and rape in 2010, following the release of her album, “Endlessly.”

“It was my birthday; I was drugged at a restaurant, I was drugged then for four weeks and traveled to a foreign country. I can’t remember getting on the plane and came round in the back of a traveling vehicle,” she wrote. “I was put into a hotel room, and the perpetrator returned and raped me. I remember the pain and trying to stay conscious in the room after it happened. I was stuck with him for another day; he didn’t look at me, I was to walk behind him, I was somewhat conscious and withdrawn. I could have been disposed of by him.”

Duffy, whose full name is Aimee Duffy, revealed that while she wanted to escape, she feared her attacker since he had made a “veiled confession of wanting to kill me.” She also said that she feels that she was being protected during the ordeal.

“I do not know how I had the strength to endure those days. I did feel the presence of something that helped me stay alive.”

Eventually, the singer was able to escape her abductor. However, the damage lingered, forcing her to blame herself and become a recluse. Duffy said that she was at “high risk of suicide” and spent “almost 10 years completely alone,” even distancing herself from loved ones as she was “just not the same person for so long.” She cited her psychologist for helping her get through the painful aftermath.

The 35-year-old singer said that the rape had “stripped me of my human rights, to experience a life with autonomy from fear” and that it “has already stolen one-third of my life.”

Last month, the singer released her new single, “Something Beautiful,” just a few weeks after giving fans a brief insight into her traumatic ordeal in a rare Instagram post, where she assured followers that she would share the full story later.⠀⠀⠀⠀

Duffy wanted to provide an explanation as to why she suddenly disappeared from public view as well as give hope to those who have gone through similar situations.

“As dark as my story is, I do speak from my heart, for my life, and for the life of others, whom have suffered the same.”

Duffy’s debut album “Rockferry” went on to be the U.K.’s best-selling album of 2008. The album won three Brit Awards and a Grammy and contained the worldwide hit single “Mercy.”
