Six Flags CFO Says California’s Great America Park Could Close After 2027

Six Flags isn’t sugarcoating it. California’s Great America might not make it past 2027.

At a recent investor meeting, the company’s CFO, Brian Witherow, made it clear that the Santa Clara park’s future hinges on whether they decide to extend the lease.

“Unless we decide to extend, and exercise one of our options to extend that lease, that park’s last year without that extension would be after the ’27 season,” he said.

That means after the 2027 Halloween run, the park could be done for good. This park isn’t just any rollercoaster pit stop. It’s been around since 1976, when it opened as Marriott’s Great America. Since then, it’s changed owners a few times, and now it’s staring down a possible shutdown after what would be its 51st season.

Earlier this year, Six Flags also announced that its Maryland location, Six Flags America, will shut down in 2025.

“Those are two parks that are very low on the ranking of margins,” Witherow admitted.

So far, there’s no confirmation on whether Six Flags will renew the lease or let the park go. But if nothing changes, Bay Area thrill rides and funnel cakes could be off the map by late 2027.
