As COVID-19 continues to linger, new symptoms continue to emerge. The American Academy of Dermatology and some doctors seek additional research to help determine if certain skin rashes are possible symptoms of COVID-19. According to ABC7NY.com, the skin-rash symptoms range from hives to measles-like rashes to a condition resembling frostbite.
Jessica, from Los Angeles, CA, contracted COVID-19, and at the beginning of her diagnosis, she experienced the common cough and fever associated with the virus. It was later in her diagnosis that she developed a rash on her foot, a symptom that was not widely associated. In a statement to her local news, KABC-TV, she states, “I was getting in the shower, I was like, ‘Oh my gosh, my toe is turning blue, I felt like I had really bad blisters on it.”
Dr. Shirley Chi, Jessica’s dermatologist, could not readily identify the rash or its cause. She looked into studies conducted in other countries and found a possible link between Jessica’s rash and COVID-19.
“When I first saw this mysterious rash, I just didn’t know what to make of it,” Chi said. “In northern Italy, there was a study that showed that out of 148 patients at this hospital — none of which had gotten prior medication — one in five had a rash associated with their condition, COVID-19.”
The American Academy of Dermatology has issued guidance regarding several different types of rashes that have been connected with COVID-19, and the academy has established a dedicated COVID-19 dermatology platform with free access to information and resources for healthcare providers.
Dr. Chi encourages those that have similar symptoms to contact their physicians.
