Motown legend Smokey Robinson and his wife, Frances Robinson, are firing back legally against the four women who recently accused the 85-year-old singer of rape and workplace abuse. In a new countersuit filed in Los Angeles Superior Court, the couple is seeking $500 million, claiming defamation, elder abuse, and financial misconduct.
The Robinsons’ legal team argues that the original lawsuit, filed earlier this month by four anonymous former employees, is not only false but part of a coordinated effort to extort money. According to the countersuit, the women initially sought a $100 million payout in exchange for staying silent. When those demands were rejected, they filed a public $50 million civil suit accusing Robinson of multiple sexual assaults over the years in his California and Las Vegas homes.
In their response, the Robinsons describe the plaintiffs as individuals they treated with kindness and generosity during their time as household staff. The new filing also accuses the women of stealing valuable financial records and even implicates them in the theft of gold coins and other property from a hidden safe inside the Robinson home.
Beyond financial accusations, the countersuit takes aim at a May 6 press conference held by the accusers and their legal team, claiming it inflicted reputational damage beyond the courtroom. The Robinsons argue that such public statements forced them to defend themselves and seek legal action of their own.
They also point to a long list of support they provided to the women during their employment, including covering dental expenses and transportation needs. Their attorneys allege that despite this assistance, the women are now falsely portraying themselves as victims.
The original suit, which includes detailed and graphic allegations, claims that Robinson assaulted the women multiple times over the years. It also accuses Frances Robinson of creating a hostile work environment and withholding wages.
