Music icon Smokey Robinson is now in hot water after a criminal investigation was launched related to alleged sexual assaults.
TMZ first reported learned that Robinson is under investigation by the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department after three women filed police reports on Friday, alleging sexual assault. Law enforcement sources confirm that the department’s Special Victims Unit has opened a criminal probe, currently in its early stages. Investigators reportedly plan to contact Robinson regarding the allegations.
Attorneys John Harris and Herbert Hayden, representing the three accusers, stated, “We are pleased to learn that the L.A. County Sheriff’s Dept has opened a criminal investigation into our clients’ claims of sexual assault against Smokey Robinson. Our clients intend to fully cooperate with LASD’s ongoing investigation in the pursuit of seeking justice for themselves and others that may have been similarly assaulted by him.”
This follows a recent civil lawsuit filed by four Jane Does, who claim they were previously employed as Robinson’s housekeepers. The suit accuses him of sexual battery, assault, false imprisonment, and gender violence. The women allege that Robinson summoned them into his bedroom or other private areas of his home, typically while his wife was away, where he allegedly assaulted them.
Robinson’s attorney, Christopher Frost, dismissed the lawsuit as “an attempt to extract money from an 85-year-old American icon,” calling the claims “totally false.” He added, “We welcome that investigation… exposure to the truth is a powerful thing,” asserting that the accusations are “a manufactured lawsuit intended to tarnish the good names of Smokey and Frances Robinson…for no other reason than unadulterated avarice.”
