Actor-producer #MarkWahlberg is getting a reminder of his racist and hate crime-filled past after the star made a post in honor of the slain #GeorgeFloyd.
It doesn’t take long for social media to bring up something from your past, especially if you’ve already been called out about the issue before. Well, that’s what happening to Wahlberg, who is currently being slammed and reminded of his decades-long racist history. While he may be the star of some fan-favorite films, Wahlberg has provoked and been a part of attacks on people of color during his upbringing in South Boston.
The 49-year-old actor has since apologized for actions, but he isn’t being let off the hook that easily. Wahlberg posted a picture of Floyd on Instagram with a caption that read: “The murder of George Floyd is heartbreaking. We must all work together to fix this problem. I’m praying for all of us. God bless.” Not too long after Wahlberg hit “share,” several people online started swarming his comments calling him a “hypocrite” for now supporting the #BlackLiveMatter movement in spite of his past.
“If you still don’t know what white privilege is, Mark Wahlberg committed hate crimes, has a Wikipedia section dedicated to it, and we never ever talk about it,” one fan wrote with a photo of Wahlberg’s Wikipedia entry, which has a detailed outline of his racist past. Soon after, the “Hate Crime” section was amended to read “Controversy.” Fans then began to suspect that his team had caught on to the Wiki section and changed it.
“I was today years old when I found out Mark Wahlberg has an ENTIRE hate crimes section on his Wikipedia page. Someone (likely on his team) has also changed the header because it now reads ‘controversy,'” a social media user wrote in response to the edit. Some of the hate crimes Wahlberg was involved in included throwing rocks at Black children in his neighborhood while calling them the “N-word,” he was also jailed for 45 days for assaulting a Vietnamese man. To clear his name, Wahlberg has apologized, however, he previously faced some criticism after he attempted to receive a pardon from the Massachusetts parole board in order to cover up his racist history to clean up his image. After receiving backlash from the public, he decided to drop the request.
