A sports official is out of work temporarily after a video showed her niece slowly skipping to the finish line.
The viral clip has demonstrated a grotesque display of nepotism on behalf of official Khadijo Aden Dahir. Authorities believe she allowed her untrained niece to compete in the International University Sports Federation’s (FISU) Summer World University Games without being appropriately qualified. The video shows her relative, Nasro Abukar Ali moving extremely slowly as she competed in the 100-meter race, CNN reports.
Ali finished in 21.81 seconds, which has been called the “slowest-ever” in an international competition. Per the report, Ali completed the race more than eight seconds slower than the second-last runner. Ali was spotted on the video skipping “sluggishly” across the finish line. Seeing how slow the young woman ran, the Ministry of Youth and Sports of Somalia launched a probe. They found that Ali was not an athlete at all. In fact, they believed Dahir simply used her access as Chairwoman of the Somali Athletics Federation to grant the 20-year-old admission into the race.
Now, the Ministry is considering legal action against Dahir after their investigation is concluded.
“It’s disheartening to witness such an incompetent government. How could they select an untrained girl to represent Somalia in running? It’s truly shocking and reflects poorly on our country internationally,” the Ministry’s said in a statement.
