Some people’s long-awaited stimulus checks have been deposited into the wrong bank accounts.
If it isn’t one thing, it’s another. On Wednesday, the majority of the country was supposed to receive their government-issued stimulus checks, a response to the lack of employment and business closures amid the coronavirus. But some were saddened to learn that their money was given to someone else.
The Treasury Department and the Internal Revenue Service created a “Get My Payment web application, which enables people to see exactly when and how their payments are being processed. According to USA Today, about 80 million people didn’t receive their payout this week, and the millions say their check was deposited into an account that wasn’t theirs.
Others who didn’t receive their money reached out to the IRS via Twitter and explained that after inputting their contact information, the tracking tool showed them that their money would go into their accounts on April 15. One woman said her payment that never came was going to be used to pay off bills. “I was so confused. I don’t know where they got that number from. I lost two weeks of pay because I was sick. I was depending on that for my car payment,” said 23-year-old Aimme Saldana.
If you don’t see your check, the government is telling individuals to contact their bank to confirm its receipt. In an interview with USA Today, IRS spokesperson Jodie Reynolds said she had no knowledge about stimulus checks being deposited into the wrong banks but that she would be looking into the issue. “The payment isn’t going to bounce back and just sit here,” Reynolds told USA Today. “We will turn around and cut them a paper check and make sure they get their money.”
