Just hours after John Conyers announced his retirement, as well as his desire to be replaced by his son in Congress, TMZ has learned that John Conyers III was recently arrested for felony domestic violence.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The former had recently stepped down amid several allegations of sexual misconduct. Although he had denied all allegations against him, the mounting allegations led the congressman to resign from the position. However, he did reveal that he would like his son, Conyers III, to be the heir to his congressional seat.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
According to TMZ, back in February, Conyers III got into a fight with his girlfriend. Officials say he accused his girlfriend of cheating after snooping through her computer, however, the argument quickly turned physical after Conyers III body slammed the woman on her bed. The woman then told officials that he pinned her down and spit on her.

When the woman tried to phone officials, he reportedly took her phone. The woman also told police that Conyers III chased her into the kitchen, prompting her to pull a knife on him and force him to leave. However, to the woman’s surprise, Conyers III grabbed the knife, swung at her and stabbed her in the right bicep. According to TMZ, the woman says the physical abuse didn’t end there, she said he then chased her back into the bedroom, where he pinned her down and slapped her.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Both parties phoned officials, revealing two different stories. Although the woman had physical evidence of the abuse, Conyers III told police that the woman pulled a knife on him and he grabbed it to protect himself, accidentally slapping her in the process.

Police didn’t buy it. As a result, Conyers III was arrested for felony domestic violence. However, prosecutors failed to pursue charges because of the lack of evidence that the stabbing was intentional.

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“The DA dismissed the charges, but it’s something that causes me a lot of anguish and now it’s associated with me,” Conyers III told CNN of the incident. “I know what happened, and I know I’m innocent. ”

⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
As for the seat in Congress, he told the publication that the endorsement caught him off guard, saying, “I appreciate his endorsement. I was caught off-guard. I’m not saying I don’t want it. He endorsed me, and he didn’t have to do it. I was surprised in the manner in which he did it because I haven’t made up my mind about what I plan to do.”
