Sony is taking gaming to a new level with a new groundbreaking feature. At CES 2025, the Playstation creator announced its Future Immersive Entertainment Concept, which is a room-sized system that brings an enhanced experience to gaming. The anticipated concept was showcased in a nearly 2-minute trailer video, highlighting the “high-tech box” system and its cutting-edge features including Sony Crystal LED panels covering every wall, surround sound audio, and the ability to smell the virtual world.
“One of the pillars of Sony’s creative entertainment vision is the idea of narrative everywhere, where stories from Sony are transformed across new and exciting mediums,” the video said. “This Future Immersive Entertainment Concept aims to explore these possibilities. This proof-of-concept project combines the latest location-based technologies, Sony Crystal LED panels, engaging audio, haptics, scent and atmospherics to fully immerse you into the world of the story.”
In Sony’s demonstration featured the acclaimed action-adventure game, The Last Of Us, that’s set in an post-apocalyptic world. The players explored the dystopian landscape that’s filled with aggressive creatures and navigated the game while experiencing the sights, sounds, and even smells of the interactive game.
Even though the concept may seem like something many gamers may want to purchase, Sony hasn’t announced how the technology will be made available for customers. But, interestingly enough, Sony filed for a a patent for “smell-o-vision” in 2023 shortly after the release of the DualScent controller. But, this isn’t the first time scents have been introduced into gaming. In 2013, Microsoft created a scent-emitting controller for the Xbox One and released pizza-scented Xbox controllers a decade later to celebrate the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles movie.
