A sorority at Methodist University in North Carolina has been suspended after its members created a PowerPoint presentation that mocked and compared Black football players to their white teammates.

“Deeply embarrassed” is how members of the Alpha Delta Pi chapter say they feel after getting caught being racist. The sorority was suspended “indefinitely” after one of its members was seen in a picture mocking Black players on the college’s football team.

On Tuesday, the university issued a statement saying they “abhor racism in any form on campus.” It added that it would be suspending the sorority until further notice, Yahoo! News reports. The white sorority member displayed pictures of the Black players with captions titled “large nostrils” and “big lips.”
The members’ racism led the national sorority to make an apologetic statement on its Twitter account.

“We extend our sincerest apologies to the Methodist football team, the student body, the sisters of color in our chapter, university faculty and staff, and university alumni regarding racist comments that took place at our event on September 14, 2021. We failed you, we failed the oath we made to Alpha Delta Pi, and we failed ourselves,” read the statement.

“We first failed when one of our members made racist comments. It’s deeply disturbing to realize we have not created the kind of chapter culture where racial jokes wouldn’t be welcome. Then we failed our values and community by not speaking up to stop it. This is bystander behavior, and we’re deeply embarrassed that despite knowing better, we didn’t do better,” it continued.

The member who made the presentation was suspended. The sorority claims that it has plans to implement diversity and inclusion training on not being a racist.
