2020 has been a tough year with losing those that have paved the way for many.
America has lost another beautiful soul, Betty Wright, who has brought us countless hits from “Tonight is the Night” to “No Pain No Gain.”
The Miami native recorded her debut album at the age of 15, “My First Time Around.” Wright’s most successful hit “Clean Up Woman” peaked at #2 on the R&B charts and #6 on the Billboard pop charts in 1972.
In 1975, Wright won a Grammy for Best R&B Song for “Where Is the Love?”
In the early ’80s, Betty Wright started her very own label, Mrs. B Records. “No Pain No Gain” became a hit for the singer and reached #14 on the R&B radio chart in the late ’80s.
Wright continued to show her love of music by contributing songwriting, backing vocals, vocal production, and engineering work to albums by dozens of high-profile artists, including Erykah Badu, Regina Belle, Jennifer Lopez, Angie Stone, Lil Wayne, and more. She also worked on Diddy‘s Press Play and appeared as a vocal coach on the Bad Boy label head’s Making the Band series.
In 2011, she collaborated with the Roots on Betty Wright: The Movie, her first solo album in a decade.
Betty Wright resides in her hometown of Miami, Florida, until her passing. She will forever be remembered through her music.
