Just hours after celebrating his 35th birthday in true L.A. nightlife fashion, Soulja Boy found himself in handcuffs early Sunday morning. The rapper, legally known as DeAndre Cortez Way, was taken into custody by LAPD during a routine traffic stop around 2:50 a.m. on August 3, according to inmate records.
Soulja was reportedly the passenger in a vehicle pulled over near Melrose and Genesee. According to both TMZ and Variety, officers discovered a firearm inside the vehicle and arrested the rapper on suspicion of being a felon in possession of a firearm. He was later booked at 6:18 a.m. on a felony charge.
Neither the LAPD nor Soulja’s legal team have commented publicly.
This arrest follows a high-energy Saturday night, where Soulja posted Instagram Story footage of himself celebrating at a Los Angeles club. Earlier in the day, he previewed new music on Twitch, continuing to push momentum from his February album, “The Influence.”
His legal troubles extend beyond this arrest. In April, a California jury ordered Soulja to pay $4 million to a former assistant, known in court documents as Jane Doe. She accused him of sexual assault and false imprisonment in a 2021 lawsuit. Soulja denied the claims, telling Rolling Stone, “I never done any of the things they’re accusing me of.”
His legal team added, “It is unfortunate that aspersions and misperceptions of a culture were allowed to influence the trial,” adding that he intends to “fight for a just result.”
Doe’s attorney, Ron Zambrano, said she felt “vindicated” and they were prepared for the next phase to determine punitive damages.
Soulja’s latest arrest adds another legal hurdle for the rapper already battling a major civil judgment.
