Shooting at South Carolina Juneteenth Celebration Leaves 1 Dead, 10 Injured

A Juneteenth celebration turned tragic in Anderson County, South Carolina, after a shooting broke out late Saturday night, leaving one person dead and nearly a dozen others injured.

Authorities say the violence erupted just before 11 p.m. near VFW Post 6089 along Scarborough Road. “At least 10 people were gunned down in a neighborhood along Scarborough Road after a fight ensued on the street and shots rang out,” said the Anderson County Sheriff’s Office. “Right now, deputies can confirm one person is unfortunately dead, one patient was flown to Greenville Memorial Hospital, and at least 8 others were taken to nearby hospitals, including in Anderson and Greenville.”

Footage shared by ACSO on Instagram shows a heavily policed area with a road blocked off, reflecting what officials called “a chaotic scene.” According to their statement, “hundreds of people scattered, leaving behind shoes and debris in the roadway.”

Despite the incident happening just feet from the VFW building, officials clarified the post had “NO affiliation with the event itself.” The annual celebration was part of Anderson County’s sixth year recognizing Juneteenth.

More than 100 emergency responders were on site, including law enforcement, EMS, firefighters, troopers, and DNR agents. As of now, no suspect has been identified.

“This remains an active investigation, and detectives and deputies continue to work this unfolding scene,” ACSO stated. Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.

The Anderson County Sheriff’s Office has not released further comments.
