A small South Carolina town that recently experienced public safety turmoil is now dealing with the sudden death of its mayor.
Earlier this week, McColl mayor, 49-year-old George Garner II, was killed in a head-on collision while being pursued by authorities. According to Darlington County Coroner Todd Hardee, the crash occurred in Mechanicsville after Garner’s vehicle collided with another truck. Hardee stated that the Marlboro County Sheriff’s Deputy who was involved in the chase was not pursuing Garner for any violations but to “protect” his “well-being” instead.
“When the incident occurred, Mr. Garner was being pursued by a Marlboro County Deputy. The pursuit was not related to any laws being broken. The pursuit was taking place in an effort to protect the well-being of Mr. Garner,” Hardee said.
The unexpected tragedy comes just a few days after the town’s entire police department resigned, leaving approximately 2,000 residents without law enforcement. Led by Chief Bob Hale, the resignations stemmed from Hale accusing the town councilman of creating a hostile work environment.
“It is with a heavy heart that I do confirm my resignation as Chief of Police of the McColl Police Department along with all four of my fellow officers,” Hale wrote on Facebook. “My personal decision to step away from the McColl Police Department can be attributed to repeated acts of harassment, personal attacks on my character, and the overall creation of a hostile work environment perpetuated by a specific Councilman.”
He continued, “For months, I have endured unwarranted and malicious behavior aimed at undermining my integrity and leadership. These actions have not only affected me personally but have also created a toxic atmosphere that has hindered the department’s ability to function effectively. Despite our efforts to address these issues professionally and through appropriate channels, the harassment and hostility have persisted.”
Nonetheless, following Garner’s passing, the Marlboro County Emergency Management/911 department issued a statement regarding his death, describing the mayor as a “remarkable individual” who treated people with kindness and respect.
“On behalf of Marlboro County E911, we extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Mayor George Garner,” the statement read. “Our hearts are heavy during this difficult time, and we are keeping everyone affected in our thoughts and prayers.”
