A South Memphis toddler is hospitalized after using a straw laced with a drug substance.
On Friday, the Memphis Police Department was called to a home at the 700 block of Regent Place. Upon arrival, authorities learned that a toddler had overdosed.
According to MPD, the overdose happened after the child came in contact with a drug-laced straw.
“One female juvenile was transported to Le Bonheur in critical condition,” Lieutenant Louis Brownlee said. “Officers are investigating. They want to find the source of those drugs, find the person who had those drugs.”
Neighbors surrounding the scene who learned about the incident shared their opinions to FOX 13.
“It’s sad that people are not aware of what they are doing out here in the world around their children,” one resident said. “For this to happen to a child, an overdose. It’s real sad. I hope they can see now what drugs does to a family.”
The toddler is currently in critical condition but is said to be stable. No suspects have been identified yet, but authorities say the investigation is still ongoing.
