One of hip-hop’s most prominent music producers, Southside, was arrested over the weekend in Florida for possessing a loaded weapon.
The incident took place on Sunday. Southside, whose real name is Joshua Howard Luellen, was pulled over in Aventura for having a “heavily tinted windshield.” Southside allegedly told police officers he had a Georgia driver’s license but didn’t have it with him at the time. At some point, police determined that his license had been suspended since May 2019. Upon further inspection of the vehicle, officers located one gun on the floorboard behind his passenger seat and another between his shoes.
According to the police report, Southside violated his concealed carry weapons (CCW) permit violation by “having the firearms within reach and not secured in the glove box or encased in a box inside the vehicle.” However, authorities later discovered that his CCW permit had also been suspended for unknown reasons. He was arrested and charged with carrying a concealed firearm and knowingly driving with a suspended license. The 32-year-old has since been released on a $5,500 bond.
In an Instagram Live following his release, Southside said that he believed his arrest resulted from jealously and racism by the officers. He also maintains that his driver’s license is not suspended.
