Has your passport taken you to every continent on the planet and you’re looking for something new? How about traveling to outer space? Soon that will be an option.
SpaceX CEO, Elon Musk announced today that two people have scheduled a tour around the moon for 2018. The two citizens placed a hefty deposit for the trip, though it hasn’t been revealed just how much they paid. But if you’d like to compare, CNN reports that space tourists in the past have paid the Russia government upwards of $20 million for a trip to the International Space Station. NASA has paid the Russians $80 million a seat to send astronauts to the earth orbiting space station.
“Like the Apollo astronauts before them, these individuals will travel into space carrying the hopes and dreams of all humankind, driven by the universal human spirit of exploration,” SpaceX said in a blog post.
The space craft will take off from the same launch pads used for the Apollo programs missions near Cape Canaveral, Florida. The hopeful space tourists will have to pass a series of fitness tests and begin training later this year. SpaceX hopes that this week-long trip will be the first of many, as several people have already expressed strong interest.
“Next year is going to be a big year for carrying people to the space station and hopefully beyond,” Musk said in a conference call.
