After months of public jabs, Olympic gold medalist Noah Lyles and Miami Dolphins star Tyreek Hill are officially set to race.
“This has been an ongoing thing for quite some time,” says Hill, who boldly claimed last August that he could outrun Lyles, the reigning 100m Olympic champion.
“I’ve been very adamant to show people what real, true speed looks like,” he told People this week.
Lyles upped the stakes after winning his fourth straight 60m final at the New Balance Indoor Grand Prix on February 2nd, holding a sign that read: “Tyreek could never.”
“I think it speaks for itself,” Lyles says. “Everybody claims they’re the fastest, but you gotta win every time. I do it at the Olympics, at world championships—wherever it’s needed.”
While Hill has “a lot of respect” for Lyles, he sees this as a chance to represent NFL speed.
“We did run track at some point, and we can take over your sport if we really wanted to,” he boasts.
The trash talk is in full swing. Hill playfully accuses Lyles of dodging a 40m race. “He knew he was gonna lose off the jump.”
“I did that not to embarrass you,” Lyles fires back. “If it were 100m, it’d be a blowout.”
Hill famously told Lyles last year that he would beat him wearing a COVID-19 mask. Only time will tell now, though it remains unclear when the race will take place.
