With the swirling conversations about race, especially in the music industry, dancehall star Spice is weighing in.
She recently sat down with 96.1 The Beat’s Big Homie House (@thebighomieshouse), where she explained how the frequent discussions of blackness are causing division. According to her, she hates how people try to “separate us” when discussing color.
“I just think we’re all Black. That’s just my views on it…I don’t like the separation. I think if you’re Black, you’re just Black,” the “Go Down Deh” singer explained.
Her comments follow a growing debate regarding Tyla, who has identified herself as “coloured.” Being from Johannesburg, South Africa, this is a common way people in the region identify themselves. However, as she entered the U.S. market, many Black and Brown fans took issue with the way Tyla chose to identify. Spice believes that none of this matters when people of color encounter racists who are only interested in spewing hate.
“It doesn’t matter what race or where you’re from, your ethnicity. It doesn’t matter your nationality. If you should receive a racism or anything, nobody not gonna stop and say ‘Which country you from?’ They just see Black. They just see a Black woman. So, it doesn’t matter if I was born in America or if I was born in Jamaica. I’m Black,” she added.
