On Friday, DJ Spinderella denounced the Lifetime biopic of her former group Salt-N-Pepa for leaving her entirely out of the project.

“Sorry, but I gotta speak on this Lifetime special..,” she started the series of tweets. “Too often, Black women who have made meaningful contributions in their industry are left out of historical narratives.”

“Words cannot fully express my disappointment when I learned a decision was made to move forward with a Lifetime biopic that wrongfully excluded me from every aspect of development and production…,” she continued. “all the while using my image throughout, given that I played an integral role in the group’s story and success.”

Although expressing her disappointment in being left out of the project, she gives props to the actress who played her in Monique Paul. The iconic deejay conveyed that she would’ve loved the opportunity to share her perspective with the actress.

“I do, however, want to offer a huge congratulations to the talented actresses that represented us, including Monique Paul, who I wish would’ve been given an opportunity to share my true perspective with,” the tweet read.

In conjunction with the series of tweets, Spin issued a formal statement on her Instagram. The post echoed what she said on Twitter. However, not all her feelings are negative as she is thankful for her 30-year career empowering women and reveals that she is in the final stages of writing her memoir. She describes the book as “a personal journey navigating through life, relationships, and the industry that raised” her.

According to TMZ, Spin sued Salt-N-Pepa back in 2019 over unpaid royalties she claimed the group owed her. Five months later, the suit was dropped after a confidential settlement was reached.
