A group led by activist and former Georgia Democratic gubernatorial candidate Stacey Abrams has launched a campaign to help gather young voters of color around the For the People Act.
For the People Act, or S. 1, is the Senate version of a voting rights bill being supported by Democratic legislators. The bill’s mission is to “expand voting rights, change campaign finance laws to reduce the influence of money in politics, limit partisan gerrymandering, and create new ethics rules for federal officeholders,” Office and the Library of Congress.
The campaign for the bill is called Hot Call Summer and will carry on throughout June. It will also be featured in virtual events, and at least 10 million voters in the battleground states will be contacted in 2022.
“We can’t wait any longer for Congress to protect Americans’ freedom to vote, which is why we need Senators to pass the For The People Act (HR1/S1),” Abrams said in an email to supporters, which CBS News obtained. “With voting rights under attack in 48 out of 50 state legislatures across the country, the moment has never been more urgent, and it will take all of us to ensure that Congress passes the voting rights protections our country and democracy desperately need.”
