Voting rights activist and former Georgia gubernatorial nominee Stacey Abrams has been nominated for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize.
Abrams has been praised for registering thousands of voters for the 2020 presidential election. She heavily influenced voter turnout, which directly helped Joe Biden to secure the win against former President Donald Trump.
Lars Haltbrekken, a Socialist Party member of Norway’s parliament, said that Abrams is picking up where Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who also won the Nobel Peace Prize, left off over 50 years ago.
“Abrams’ efforts to complete King’s work are crucial if the United States of America shall succeed in its effort to create fraternity between all its peoples and a peaceful and just society,” Haltbrekken praised.
The Yale Law School graduate served in the Georgia House of Representatives from 2007 to 2017, before entering Georgia’s governor race in 2018 as the Democratic nominee. She became the first African-American female major-party gubernatorial nominee in the country. However, she was defeated by the Republican nominee, Brian Kemp.
Other nominees for this year’s Nobel Peace Prize include the World Health Organization, the Black Lives Matter movement, Russian dissident Alexei Navalny and climate campaigner Greta Thunberg.
The winner of this year’s prize is expected to be announced in October.
