Stacey Abrams, who rose to fame while running as the Democratic nominee in the 2018 Gubernatorial election, says Republican governor Brian Kemp’s decision to open the state is “deeply problematic.”
“There’s no legitimate reason for reopening the state except for politics, and I think it’s deeply disingenuous he would pretend otherwise,” Abrams said on CBS This Morning.
This comes after her former rival, Governor Kemp, said he would lift lockdowns on salons, restaurants, and gyms as soon as Friday.
Georgia has more than 19,000 confirmed cases of coronavirus with little sign of slowing. Many believe opening states prematurely could lead to another surge in infections.
“We’re not ready to return to normal,” Abrams said. “We have people who are the most vulnerable and the least resilient being put on the front lines, contracting a disease that they cannot get treatment for.”
Abrams has now started Project 100, an initiative to help low-income families during the coronavirus pandemic.
