The numbers are in and ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’ has brought in $238 million over its opening weekend, making it the biggest North American debut of all time. On top of that, the J.J Abrams film earned a whopping $517 million in worldwide ticket sales. These numbers will only increase considering the fact that Star Wars has yet to hit theatres in China. The film will be released there on January 9.
Star Wars managed to uphold its success of ticket sales even in the face of worries of terrorism. Theatres were evacuated in New Jersey and California over the weekend, in what fortunately turned out be false alarms.
For some time now, Star Wars has been in a league of its own, and this box office outcome has trumped everyone’s predictions. These astronomical ticket sales prove that Star Wars is a film people will love forever. Reviews for “The Force Awakens” were 95% positive according to Rotten Tomatoes website.
Prior to Star Wars, Universal’s “Jurassic World,” which drew $208.8 million during the summer, held the opening record.
