Starz has picked up Magic City: An American Fantasy, a five-part docuseries that delves into the legacy of Atlanta’s world-famous strip club, known for its deep ties to hip-hop, sports, and celebrity culture.
Dubbed the “Black Studio 54,” Magic City has been a defining force in hip-hop for decades, launching careers, shaping music trends, and attracting A-list figures like 2 Chainz, Nelly, Shaquille O’Neal, Quavo, Killer Mike, and Big Boi.
The series, set to premiere this summer, is executive produced by a powerhouse team, including Drake’s DreamCrew Entertainment, Jermaine Dupri, Jami Gertz (Atlanta Hawks owner), showrunner Bayan Joonam, Devin Amar, and Alex Kaplan. It was originally screened at SXSW 2023 and is produced by Scheme Engine, a BIPOC-owned studio focused on diverse storytelling.
Directed by Charles Todd, the docuseries gives viewers an unprecedented look at the man behind the club, Michael “Mr. Magic” Barney, as well as the women who helped shape its allure.
