State Inspectors Find Evidence of Rats in Atlanta Kroger

Earlier this month, The Georgia Department of Agriculture made a disturbing discovery of rat infestation inside a Smyrna Kroger grocery store.

“It’s enough to turn your stomach, it’s just disgusting,” Amber Dent, a former Kroger employee, said.

“It was disgusting, revolting.  The smell alone is nauseating,” Dent added.  “Initially, I had heard stories about the rats.  It was a thing buzzing around the store, but then I started seeing them.  I started seeing them come in at night.”

After working at the store for three months, she quit and voiced her concerns publicly. Atlanta News First advised her to notify the Georgia Department of Agriculture, leading to a state inspector’s visit to the store on Friday (Aug.11).

“Our inspector found pretty significant evidence of rodent activity at the establishment,” Dent said.

In response, the department enforced a stop-sale order on all affected products, leading Kroger to dispose of the items in a landfill on Tuesday.

“We’re talking about rodent droppings, evidence of burrowing done by the rodents, as well as a strong smell of urine in the trailer,” said Matthew Agvent, a Georgia Department of Agriculture spokesperson.

The last routine inspection of the Kroger store occurred in 2021.  A certified food protection manager was not on-site during that time.

Inspectors found dust on shelves, a minor violation that was resolved.  Additional inspections took place in 2022 and as recently as June 2023.

In a statement, Kroger’s corporate office said: “Food safety is Kroger’s No. 1 priority.  We are actively working with the Georgia Department of Agriculture regarding this isolated incident and following their guidance and direction.  We are also bolstering operational and training protocol at the store.”

“It’s just sad to say that it took me coming in and experiencing it for a short period of time and speaking up for something to be done,’ Dent said.

The Georgia Department of Agriculture intends to return to the store this week to dispose of all the tainted food.

Additionally, they will conduct a follow-up inspection to verify the eradication of the rat issue.
