“I’m back! I’m back!” Warriors’ Steph Curry declared during overtime in Game 4 against the Portland Trail Blazers. Indeed he is. Returning from a right knee injury that kept him sidelined for four games, the soon-to-be-crowned NBA MVP reminded everyone once again why he is so deserving of that title.
The night started out slow for Curry. In fact, he missed his first nine three-point attempts, which is rare for the man who holds the NBA record for most three-point shots made in a single season. But just like the Drake song, Chef Curry went from 0 to 100 throughout the course of the night. What started out as a slow transition back into the swing of things quickly turned into another record-breaking night for Curry. He scored 23 points through four quarters but missed a shot that would have won the game in regulation. However, once overtime began, Curry went into beast mode. He hit six consecutive shots, including 3 three-pointers, and two free throws for 17 points, and broke the NBA record for most points scored in overtime.
What added to the shock element of Curry’s performance on Monday night was the fact that no one expected him to be back. On Sunday, Warriors head coach Steve Kerr listed Curry as doubtful and moved him to questionable on Monday morning. It wasn’t until just before the game that it was announced that Curry was cleared to play. Just a day removed from “doubtful” status, Curry returned to the court and put on a performance that left even the owner of the Trail Blazers with his mouth open in disbelief.
“It took me awhile to get back in the flow,” Curry said. “When you miss three weeks, it’s really weird to walk back on the court. Like, the crowd out there going crazy and that competitive atmosphere again. So, just trying to get my bearings straight, make some plays and try and get a rhythm. And it took 48 minutes and things finally clicked.”
The Warriors are now 3-1 against the Blazers and just one win away from advancing to the conference finals. At the rate that Curry is going, chances are very good that the Warriors will be making another trip to the NBA Finals in June, cause the man is on fire!
