The Pittsburgh Steelers pulled off a 26-18 victory over the New York Giants at home on Monday Night Football, extending their impressive streak to 22 consecutive home wins on Mondays. Russell Wilson, still undefeated as a starter for the Steelers, is quickly building electric chemistry with rising star George Pickens. In just two games together, the pair has combined for nine catches and nearly 200 yards (185 to be exact), adding two touchdowns—though one was called back on a penalty and another overturned after replay review.
The Steelers got a much-needed boost from special teams, courtesy of a 73-yard punt return by Calvin Austin III in the third quarter, which sparked an offense that had been stagnant in the first half. The play shifted momentum, and ESPN’s Stephen A. Smith believes the team’s Super Bowl aspirations are now within reach with Wilson running the offense.
“I’m not saying they’re the favorites,” Smith shared, “but you have to pay attention to them. They’re sitting on top of the AFC North, a game ahead of the Baltimore Ravens.”
Smith added that the Steelers are one of the most balanced teams in terms of identity, lack of controversy, and health. “I’m looking at the Pittsburgh Steelers, and there are no questions about their defense,” Smith stated. “Offensively, with Justin Fields, they averaged 20.7 points per game, and he posted a 4-2 record. But now with Wilson, they’re scoring 31.5 points and racking up 417.5 yards in the two games he’s started. That’s more like it. If Wilson keeps performing like this and the Steelers’ defense is anchored by none other than TJ Watt—I’m telling you, I can’t dismiss the Pittsburgh Steelers as a serious threat.”
TJ Watt put on a clinic Monday night, forcing a fumble and recovering the ball himself. Watt continues to lead the NFL in snap counts for players at his position and ranks in the top twenty percent for hurries among defensive players, often facing double teams. Known for his high-octane play, Watt is giving the Steelers a real puncher’s chance for a deep playoff run. And if Russell Wilson can keep this rhythm with Pickens, the Steelers just might have what it takes to make a Super Bowl appearance.
