The twelve ladies for Team USA Women’s Basketball were announced, but rookie guard Caitlin Clark was excluded, causing some uproar. Despite the outcry, Clark had not proven herself to be a player deserving of a spot on the team over any of the existing guards. Fans claimed that without Clark, viewership would drop, which is not true. Sandy Brondello, head coach of the New York Liberty and the Australian National Team, explained that Team USA has only lost three of their last 70 games.
Clark’s absence is not going to mess up their flow, and there is no player that Clark should replace on this team. According to the media, Clark’s absence is a glaring problem, but not to the typical WNBA basketball fan. Stephen A. Smith, who is not a frequent WNBA watcher like ESPN’s Andraya Carter, had an interesting take this morning when he tried to explain to Carter and the First Take crew about the marketability of Clark and why she should be on the team.
“I am telling you right now you are going to be underpaid for the rest of what I believe will be an illustrious career unless you get your mind right about that marketing, it matters,” Smith said this morning. Andryana was candid with her response and let SAS know that that was not her get-down.
“I hear you, Stephen A., but I will not sacrifice my basketball knowledge and my integrity in terms of the game for marketing,” Carter said. “My marketing is doing just fine.”
She never lied. Carter is a pioneer in sports media as a reporter and co-host for ESPN and SEC networks.
She is included in the new and improved Big 3 with Chiney Ogwumike and Elle Duncan, garnering 18.9 million viewers during their coverage of the women’s college basketball tournament.
She mentioned that Smith also explained that Las Vegas Aces A’ja Wilson is the most marketable player in the W and should be marketed that way. Carter mentioned that if that is how Smith feels about her, let her lead the A block, not Clark, who is missing the Olympic team.
If we are going to acknowledge women’s basketball, let’s constructively discuss what is happening on the court. Check out the video below.
