Dez Bryant’s deleted tweet attaching Malika Andrews to being a ‘puppet,’ and in his opinion, biased coverage of Josh Giddey’s legal troubles in comparison to Hornets Brandon Miller during the NBA draft has caught a lot of attention within social media and sports. The race card is often used and it seems like the general public is somewhat split down the middle on who’s side to be on.
There have not been a lot of people who have spoken up in defense of Malika over the last few days. With the theory being more than a few YouTube videos and escalating it into mainstream media, colleague Stephen A Smith defended Malika on the latest episode of his podcast.
He had a huge problem with the former Dallas Cowboys receiver’s tweet.
“Let me say this Dez Bryant, I missed him… I respect you my brother, but that was a bit extreme. You see without trying to get too involved in it, I feel compelled to get involved because I think that a lot of people are missing the issue with Josh Giddey to begin with.”
Smith continues, “Josh Giddey is being investigated for messing with an underage girl, we don’t know the facts. And because we don’t know the facts and we represent a network our I’s are dotted and our T’s are crossed before we provide commentary to that. The investigation is ongoing within the NBA.”
Smith believes that Dez Bryant’s tweet was off-kilter.
“Bringing up her parents, her upbringing, some private school education. C’mon Dez, what if she brought up your stuff? C’mon bro, it’s not necessary. The reason this is a big subject to have is because I think we need to do a better job of picking our battles. Malika Andrews is a colleague of mine, there’s no question about that. We got into our little tussle on air after the Ime Udoka situation or as that was brewing. She came at me in a certain way. I checked the certain situation the way I felt the way it needed to be checked,” Smith mentioned.
He finished by mentioning that this was not about protecting Malika Andrews, it was about protecting the multimedia and journalistic space. Because like Smith says in the world of journalism you can’t always choose what you can and can’t report on.
