Deshaun Watson and the Cleveland Browns were dismantled at home by the Dallas Cowboys in a 33-17 loss in Week One. Watson went 0-10 on passes of 15 yards or more, and outside of an Amari Cooper drop in the fourth quarter, he struggled with both accuracy and composure. The Dallas Cowboys’ front seven were dominant. Watson finished the game completing just 24 of his 45 passes for only 169 yards, along with two interceptions. Outside of Daniel Jones, it may have been the worst quarterback performance of the season’s first week.
Stephen A. Smith was shocked by Watson’s play and believes that the Cleveland Browns are not a bad team overall, but he does think the man they have under center might be “horrible.”
“The [Cleveland Browns] were horrible. Now, I’m not saying they’re a horrible team,” Smith said on First Take this morning. “But they might have a horrible quarterback. We don’t know that yet. I’m certainly not going to sit up there and say that about Deshaun Watson definitively, but my brother, if you are watching—My God… it’s really, really bad. Houston was a long, long time ago. It looks so bad for Deshaun Watson right now.”
It is understood that Watson didn’t have his starting tackles or his number one running back, but in the NFL, you have to adapt and adjust. Deshaun Watson’s $230 million contract is only at the halfway mark. If he does not improve, he may start getting paid to just sit.
The Cleveland Browns will face the Jacksonville Jaguars next—a good team that lost a heartbreaker to the Miami Dolphins yesterday. Jaguars quarterback Trevor Lawrence will be looking to prove that he is not declining. An interesting matchup in Week Two could define both teams’ seasons.
