Stephenie Meyer, the author of Twilight, has announced the release date for the long-awaited franchises’ companion novel Midnight Sun. The novel was originally set to be published in 2008, but after a copy of Meyer’s manuscript was leaked online, she canceled the publication.
Now, after more than a decade, Twilight fans will finally get their companion novel. Meyer initially teased the reveal by posting a clock on her social media pages as well as her websites, seemingly referencing a countdown of some sort. But, when it came time for fans to see the reveal, Meyer’s website crashed. The announcement was later aired on Good Morning America. Midnight Sun will become available for readers this year.
Amid the current COVID-19 pandemic, Meyer spoke on why she decided to release the novel.
She said, “It’s a crazy time right now, and I wasn’t sure if it was the right time to put this book out, but some of you have been waiting for just so, so long, it didn’t seem fair to make you wait anymore.”
Via her website, Meyer discussed the Twilight love story, but from the “point of Edward Cullen instead of Bella Swan.”
“While I was procrastinating some real editing work (I’m always at my most creative when [procrastinating] “While I was procrastinating some real editing work (I’m always at my most creative when procrastinating), I started to wonder how the first chapter of Twilight would read if it were written from Edward’s perspective. There is so much more to his side of the story than there is to Bella’s in that first chapter,” Meyer said.
“Though I didn’t have time to work on it right away, the idea of letting Edward have his chance to speak stuck with me. I couldn’t shake it. I found myself thinking his words in the middle of the night and jotting down phrases he would use while I was waiting in line at the post office. As soon as I finished my real work, I sat down and let Edward get his say,” she continued.
Twilight fans can purchase Midnight Sun, officially, on August 4, 2020.
“Hopefully, this book can be a fun distraction from the real world,” Meyer said. “I’m so excited to finally be able to share it with you.”
