Steve Harvey certainly knows how to express himself, especially when sharing the love and admiration he has for his wife.
In honor of their 15th wedding anniversary, Steve wrote an emotional love letter to his wife, Marjorie Harvey. “I think a person should give their flowers while they are living. I want to thank you, because without you there is no way my life could be this,” he said in his tribute published in Good Hossuekeeping’s July/August 2022 issue. “I owe you a debt of gratitude because you simply changed my life.”
Harvey first laid eyes on his now-wife, Marjorie, when performing a stand-up show at a Memphis comedy club in 1987. She walked in late to a seat in the front row, and Steve took the opportunity to speak directly to her during his set. “The very first thing I said to Marjorie was, ‘I don’t know who you are, but I’m going to marry you one day.’ That was the beginning,” Steve says.
While their initial sparks fizzled and they lost touch, in 2005, they reconnected through mutual friends by a twist of fate. “When we reconnected, I still wasn’t where I wanted to be. Even though I was making moves, I had nothing,” he said. “I was in a dark space for quite some time, and I think all the stars aligned for us at the right moment. I finally had somebody I could start over with.”
The comedian said it didn’t take him long to realize she was the woman for him, and that’s when he decided to make things exclusive with Majorie. After dating for a year, Steve proposed, and the pair became husband and wife on June 25, 2007.
When reflecting on his time with Marjorie, Steve shared how supportive his wife was from the beginning and how she offered him something he’d never had before; Peace. “Receiving that gift from you freed me up to think and really do my job. But you didn’t stop there,” he said. “You had a lot of foresight about my future that I didn’t have.”
After much success in his personal and business life, Steve made it clear that he owes most of his accomplishments to his dear wife. “I think a person should give their flowers while they are living. I want to thank you, because without you there is no way my life could be this,” said Steve. “You are the single biggest reason outside of God’s grace that I am where I am today. You’re the one. I feel like if I lost everything, you’d stay with me, and we’d build it up again. As a matter of fact, I know you would.”
Before Marjorie, Steve was married to Marcia Harvey and then to Mary Shackelford. He has four biological children from those marriages and is a proud stepfather to Marjorie’s three kids (Morgan, Jason, and Lori Harvey) — all of whom Harvey adopted. He and Lori, 25, have a close father-daughter bond.
