Stress Could Be Wrecking Your Skin—Here’s How to Fight Back

Being the body’s largest organ, the skin unavoidably mirrors the stress that builds up inside.

Stress is a natural response your body has to changes or problems. In reaction, pro-inflammatory hormones like cortisol and adrenaline are released, leading to acne breakouts, clogged pores, and skin irritation.

Over time, chronic stress can take a toll on your skin, making it more prone to inflammation and other issues. Managing stress through these three steps can help you reduce its impact on your skin and overall well-being.

Practice proper skincare

Naturally, using the right products for your skin type will help combat the effects of stress.  At a minimum, use a cleanser, moisturizer, and sunscreen. For oily skin, stick with water-based cleansers and moisturizers; for dry skin, opt for oil-based cleansers and moisturizers.

The same goes for sunscreen. Consider Murad’s Oil and Pore Reducing Broad Spectrum SPF 45 Sunscreen for acne-prone skin and Murad’s Essential-C Day Moisture Broad Spectrum SPF 30 for dry skin. Each of these products is designed to cater to your specific skin needs and enhance overall skin health.

Exercise

Another excellent way to combat stress hormones is to produce healthier ones. Through exercise, your body will produce a significant amount of endorphins, often called the “feel-good” hormones.

Endorphins ultimately reduce stress and anxiety, which help prevent stress-related skin issues like acne or inflammation. Their mood-boosting effects promote overall well-being, potentially reducing skin irritation caused by stress.

So consider a 30-minute workout routine, three times a week, and watch both your skin and body become healthier.

Shape your diet

Healthy and balanced meals are another great approach to combat stress-related skin concerns.

Adopt a diet rich in anti-inflammatory foods such as berries, omega-3 packed fatty fish, and green leafy vegetables. Also include magnesium-rich foods, as magnesium has been shown to lower cortisol levels.

This quick change in diet will help reduce inflammation and support your skin’s ability to heal and regenerate healthy skin cells.

With a solid skincare routine, regular workouts, and a balanced diet, you’ll combat stress-related skin issues and lower stress hormones. Not only will you improve your skin’s health, but you’ll also feel better all around!
