Super-Gonorrhea is a new form of Gonorrhea that is resistant to antibiotics, and one man from the U.K. has it.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gonorrhea is a bacterial infection that creates more than 78 million cases a year, but it has always been treatable – until now. Super-Gonorrhea has been popping up in areas of Japan and has now spread to the United Kingdom after a man visited Southeast Asia.
When the U.K. man went to medical officials back home, the doctors gave him the same antibiotics they’d use in other gonorrhea cases – but the medicine didn’t work.

“This is the first time a case has displayed such high-level resistance to both of these drugs and to most other commonly used antibiotics,” Gwenda Hughes, director of Public Health England’s sexually transmitted infection section, told the BBC of the case. “We are following up to ensure that the infection was effectively treated with other options and the risk of any onward transmission is minimized.”

Gonorrhea is one of the most common sexually transmitted diseases and has been getting more difficult to treat due to it getting stronger against antibiotics. The #Gonorrhea disease can be passed on by having unprotected vaginal, oral and anal sex with an infected person.

As for the U.K. man, officials are trying one last antibiotic to see if the gonorrhea responds. He is currently undergoing that treatment and will be tested again next month.
