Supply chain issues, mixed with a reduction in peppermint production over the last decade, have combined to create a candy cane shortage in 2021.Â
Economy Candy in New York City received half their candy cane order for this holiday season and sold out immediately. “Raw material and ingredient shortages globally have had quite an impact,” store owner Mitchell Cohen told the New York Post.
“Since candy canes were invented, we’ve had candy canes,” he added. The store opened in 1937 and typically sells more than 12,000 candy canes each holiday season.Â
Consequently, the candy cane shortage has led to gingerbread house construction industry issues. “We can’t really do a gingerbread house without a candy cane tree, a candy cane door, or candy cane anything,” Cohen said.Â
Amid supply chain issues, peppermint production in the United States has steadily decreased over the last decade. According to the US Department of Agriculture, peppermint production has reduced by about 25 percent since 2011.
Economy Candy isn’t only lacking in peppermint-flavored candy canes this holiday season. The candy store also sold out of its kale and ham flavored candy canes.Â

Hey everyone!
I simply came across this article about the sweet cane shortage, and I gotta say, it’s a real bummer. I mean, who would not love candy canes during the excursion season, right? It’s a total letdown to hear that supply chain issues and a reduction in peppermint production are to blame for this shortage in 2021.
Reading about Economy Candy in New York City receiving only half of their candy cane order and selling out immediately is pretty disheartening. It just goes to show how much of an impact these global raw material and ingredient shortages can have.
And let’s not forget about the gingerbread house construction industry! Without candy canes, it’s like missing a crucial element. I totally get what Mitchell Cohen from Economy Candy said about not being able to do a gingerbread house without candy canes. It’s just not the same.
In any case, let’s hope that the candy cane shortage is resolved soon, and we can all enjoy the sweet goodness of this classic holiday treat.
