Congress members are experiencing a terrifying surge in fake bomb threats that are showing no sign of slowing down.
These threats, often in the form of “swatting” incidents, are targeting lawmakers across the country and putting their lives, families, and communities in jeopardy. The latest case involved the death of a woman in a car crash in Georgia after her vehicle collided with an officer responding to a fake bomb threat at the home of Republican Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene. This follows a pattern of alarming threats to members of both parties.
Capitol Police Chief Thomas Manger testified in December that there had been over 50 swatting incidents targeting members of Congress in just one month. These dangerous hoaxes typically involve false reports of bombs or mass shootings at lawmakers’ homes, prompting SWAT teams to respond. Manger warned that these high-stakes encounters could lead to innocent people being hurt or killed, noting that multiple swatting cases occur daily.
Lawmakers from both sides of the aisle are reporting a rise in these attacks. Republican Rep. Nancy Mace has been threatened with death, while Democratic Rep. Jared Moskowitz was informed of a potential plot against his life. Rep. Wiley Nickel of California, who received death threats following a political editorial, described the environment as “very ugly” for lawmakers and their families.
In response, Capitol Police are ramping up security, deploying more officers, and helping lawmakers enhance their personal safety measures. Despite these efforts, the wave of threats continues to escalate, creating an ongoing atmosphere of fear and uncertainty.
