Two suspects have been apprehended after a shooting spree at the STEM School Highlands Ranch. The school has about 1,850 students, which covers grades K-12.
Douglas County Sheriff Tony Spurlock said the suspects are believed to be students at the school. One suspect is classified as an adult male, the other a juvenile.
According to CNN, one of the suspects has been identified as 18-year-old Devon Erickson. The other suspect’s name is being withheld because he is still being considered a minor. The Douglas County Sheriff’s department also said it would not release photos at this time to maintain the integrity of their investigation.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Reports claim shooting started in the school just before 2 p.m.Â
The suspects walked into the school, and “got deep inside the school,” engaging students in two separate classrooms, Spurlock said. One student, an 18-year-old male, was killed in the school, according to Deputy Cocha Heyden, a spokeswoman for the sheriff’s office.
Several other victims were left in critical condition; eight students were taken to local area hospitals, the youngest victim is 15 years old.⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
The shooting rattled the area and community that just marked the 20th anniversary of the deadly shooting at Columbine High School in 1999. Columbine is a mere 7 miles away from STEM School Highlands Ranch.
