Black creatives are making a name for themselves with the help of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys.
Grammy award-winning couple Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys have announced that they will be showcasing their rare art collection, “Giants: Art from the Dean Collection of Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys,” at the Brooklyn Museum from February 10th to July 7th, 2024.
Swizz Beatz, real name Kaseem Dean, has been collecting works of art since the 90s, mainly from African American artists. Swizz shares that the art was a challenge to find due to it being a nonexistent market. This motivated them to double down on it. According to ARTnews, both Swizz and Alicia have been passionate about supporting Black creatives. Featuring over 40 artists, including the likes of Arthur Jafa, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Lorna Simpson, Esther Mahlangu, and others, the Dean exhibition is in place to arouse meaningful dialogue inspired by the art and to provide a unique lens for those who value the quality in contemporary art.
“Swizz Beatz and Alicia Keys have been among the most vocal advocates for Black creatives to support Black artists through their collecting, advocacy, and partnerships. In the process, they have created one of the most important collections of contemporary art,” Brooklyn Museum director Anne Pasternak shared. “I watched as they developed a collection with real passion,” Pasternak reminisced in an interview. “I used to go to galleries with them and see them at art fairs.”
The couple shared their exciting news via Instagram.
“A lot of people talk about the culture but don’t own anything from the culture. We should be the leaders of our culture.” Swizz Beatz told Culture Magazine.
Black excellence at its finest.
