American Idol’s Syesha Mercado and her partner Tyron Deener have been reunited with their baby daughter following a custody battle.
On Friday, Mercado and Deener announced that they reunited with 2-week-old Ast but are still working on bringing home their 18-month-old son Amen’Ra.
The reunion was captured on video and posted on Mercado’s Instagram page. Deener can be heard telling supporters, “Ast is back with us.”
“Thank you from the bottom of my heart and my family for being there for us unconditionally,” he added while showing viewers a glimpse of the newborn asleep in a baby carrier.
Amen’Ra was taken by the Florida Department of Children and Families in March, PEOPLE reported. He was taken after Mercado was taken to a Florida hospital for fluids. She was in the process of transitioning from breastfeeding to the bottle because of her pregnancy at the time.
“On March 11th, our sun Amen’Ra was forcefully and legally kidnapped from us by CPS, who claim we refused a B12 shot that was a matter of life and death, which is an absolute lie,” she alleged on a GoFundMe description. “We never refused a B12 shot, and at no point was he on the verge of death.”
Manatee County Sheriff’s Office spokesperson, Randy Warren, told the outlet that an investigation into the boy’s care was launched after authorities received a tip that he was “suffering from severe malnutrition.”
“Ultimately the child, by order of a judge, was sheltered, and treatment took place,” Warren said. “The parents refused to cooperate.”
After the couple’s daughter was born, deputies “executed a pick-up order signed by a family court judge” for her. Mercado posted a video of that interaction on August 11.
“My baby is days old, and you’re taking my baby away from me. You have no heart. This is so wrong,” Mercado can be heard saying in the video.
“We still got work to do to get Ra back, but we just wanted to say thank you because of y’all … we had the proper support to get the best attorneys in the country to be able to bring justice,” Deener told followers.
