Smash or Pass? Taco Bell & Beyond Meat Team Up for “Beyond Carne Asada” in Select Locations

Taco Bell and Beyond Meat are finally releasing the first meal in their long-awaited collaboration.

Beginning on October 13, about 50 Taco Bell locations in and around Dayton, Ohio, will receive a trial run of the Beyond Meat carne asada. The plant-based protein will be included in the chain’s quesadilla, but customers can substitute any meat for the healthier option.

“We know that consumers are looking for diverse protein options that are better for the planet without compromising on taste, so we’re incredibly excited to launch our brand-new, innovative Beyond Carne Asada Steak,” stated Dariush Ajami, Beyond Meat’s Chief Innovation Officer.

The Mexican fast food franchise was initially expected to unveil its new menu item in 2021. However, the carne asada was delayed until it could be perfected. Eager to move toward healthier solutions for vegetarians and vegans, Taco Bell moved forward with its own meat substitutes last month. Last month, a replacement made of peas and chickpeas arrived at select restaurants in Birmingham, Alabama. They also created a plant-based taco shell out of pea protein for its popular Naked Chalupa.

Known as Beyond Carne Asada, this steak imposter blends wheat gluten and faba bean protein to replicate the texture and taste of the carne asada we’ve grown to love. No animal-derived ingredients are included in this new selection, and yet the same great taste remains. Taco Bell is hopeful that this trial will measure the demand for the Beyond Carne Asada and possibly make it a permanent menu offering nationwide.
