Tamar Braxton is opening up on life after surviving a suicide attempt, revealing that she focuses on her son and her health.
According to People, Braxton is determined to surround herself with positivity; one year after personal struggles, let her try and take her own life.
The singer and former reality star who has her own podcast, “Under Construction With Tamar,” talked about the incident that happened on July 16, 2020, and how she’s moving forward from it.
The 44-year-old shares the details of that day, revealing she was home with her son Logan and her then-boyfriend, David Adefeso, who found her unresponsive and rushed her to the hospital.
“That time of my life was so dark and so heavy,” she tells PEOPLE magazine in this week’s cover story. “I didn’t see how I was going to come out on the other side. I didn’t even know that there was another side. But I chose to change my life,” Braxton explained.
“Most people think, ‘Oh, she went to a hotel, probably took a bunch of drugs, was on a binge.’ It didn’t happen like that. It was just everyday life, trying to figure out how to get through the day and then …” Braxton continues, stopping short of going further into exactly what happened that day.
Braxton also revealed that she now realizes she’d never fully dealt with having been repeatedly molested as a child. She explained that the experience was brought up in a 2018 taping without her consent.
“How it came out was very traumatic for me,” Braxton shared. (A spokesperson for WE Tv declined to comment on Braxton’s most recent statements but did confirm that her past revelations about childhood sexual abuse never aired and were not discussed on Braxton Family Values.)
