Taraji P. Henson recently sat down with InStyle to discuss her new natural hair care line, “TPH by Taraji.” During the sit-down, Henson disclosed how the lack of hairstylists who were well versed in natural hair drove her to bring along her own team of stylists.
“When they need you, they will go along with your plan. When I knew I had the power to request, I started just putting my foot down and said, ‘No, I won’t do it unless I have my people,” she said.
Henson also expressed her support for Gabrielle Union amid the ”America’s Got Talent” controversy, where Union accused the television show of making comments regarding her hair being “too black” amongst other discriminatory instances.
“We are behind her, I got her back because this is ridiculous. You’re saying that her hair is too black for America? Then you don’t want black Americans watching your show. My children and my daughters and my cousins or whoever, they need representation,” she said.
The 49-year-old “Empire” actress went on to slam the stereotypes and reproach that surrounds natural hair.
“For so long we have been told that our hair in its natural state is ugly, or it’s nappy, or it’s been given these horrible descriptions. How can we fight what is naturally ours? Embrace it. Our hair defies gravity, think about that. Our hair points to the heavens, that’s powerful.”
“TPH by Taraji” is available now in Target stores, and includes 18 products geared towards natural hair, including heat protectant, edge control, and hydrating conditioner.
