Twelve days ago Teddy Bridgewater won his first State Championship as a high school coach back in his hometown of Miami, Florida. Today the QB is coming out of retirement and heading back to the NFL.
Bridgewater appeared on NFL Network’s “The Insiders,” Thursday, providing insight into his first season as a head coach and announcing his return to Detroit.
Earlier today, Head Coach of the Detroit Lions Dan Campbell announced that they will have Bridgewater on the active roster immediately. The Louisville product said on NFL Network that his return was always a part of the plan. He will see how the season plays out and then they will reassess in the offseason.
“My team knows that’s the plan,” Bridgewater said. “We wanted to win a state championship and then Coach goes back to the league, see what happens, and then come back February in the offseason, continue coaching high school football. We’ll see how it plays out.”
Lions head coach Dan Campbell said he and Bridgewater had been in contact “for a while.” Multiple teams reached out to inquire if Bridgewater desired to return. He decided his last stop before he retired was where he wanted to come back most.
Campbell is such a player’s coach that I wouldn’t be surprised if Bridgewater one day was on his staff. He had high praise for Bridgewater when speaking on his addition to the team late in the season.
“It just brings a level of professionalism, veteran presence, somebody that’s great for our team, he’s great for the position,” Campbell said. “This gives us somebody that’s played a lot in the NFL. We’re getting ready for the playoffs, and so it’ll be good to get him back in the fold with us.”
A wise statement from Campbell who has to rely on someone who has been there in the moment. They will continue to develop young quarterback Hendon Hooker, however, he cannot be thrown into the fire as the Detroit Lions fight for their first Super Bowl appearance in the team’s history.
A great line for starting Quarterback Jared Goff to be able to decipher game film with. Bridgewater is a high-level addition to a Lions team that has been riddled with injuries. Through it all, they still have managed to be first in the NFC with a 13-2 record.
