According to NBC News, an Illinois teen has been charged with a hate crime after an ad he reportedly posted on Craigslist with his black classmate’s picture captioned “slave for sale”.
The white male teenager from the Chicago suburb of Naperville has been charged with two counts of a hate crime, which are both felonies, and one count of disorderly conduct, which was reported to be a misdemeanor. He went before a judge on Wednesday in juvenile court.
The teen is reportedly 14-years-old and is a student at Naperville Central High School. On Nov. 14, the male student is alleged to have posted the hateful ad. Naperville police are investigating the incident after they reportedly found out about it four days after the posting.
“The allegations against the juvenile, in this case, are beyond disturbing,” DuPage County State’s Attorney Robert B. Berlin reportedly stated. “Hate crimes have no place in our society and will not be tolerated in DuPage County.”
Naperville police Chief Robert Marshall is said to have called the ad “despicable” and “extremely offensive”. Marshall also thanked the school for following up on the incident by investigating the criminal occurrence.
