One person was shot and killed at Mall of America after two groups got into a fight just two days before Christmas.
Bloomington Police responded to reports of gunshots coming from Nordstrom around 7:50 p.m. on Friday. Officers found a 19-year-old victim with multiple gunshot wounds. They attempted life-saving measures, but he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
During a news conference Friday night, Bloomington Police Chief Booker Hodges said that a bystander was struck by a bullet but is expected to be ok.
According to police, a group of about five to nine people got into an altercation on the first floor of Nordstrom. The argument escalated quickly, and the suspect shot the victim. CNN reports that surveillance video from the store captured the incident.
No arrests have been made, and police are working to identify a suspect. Hodges is encouraging those involved to turn themselves in to the police.
“We are going catch you, we are going lock you up, and you are going to get an orange jumpsuit,” Hodges said. “It’s just a matter of when it’s going to happen.”
Following the shooting, Mall of America was placed into lockdown.
In addition to Billboard gospel singer Jovonta Patton, several New York Giants players were inside the mall at the time of the shooting. The Giants are in town to play Minnesota Vikings on Saturday.
Neither Patton nor any members of the Giants organization were injured during the shooting.
The lockdown was lifted, and the mall was closed for the evening.
