One student is dead following a North Carolina high school shooting that has left a community shaken.
Authorities responded to Mount Tabor High School in Winston-Salem around 12:07 p.m. following reports of a shooting on school property. Mount Tabor and surrounding schools were immediately placed on lockdown as law enforcement worked to secure the scene.
First responders located William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound. He was administered life-saving measures but eventually succumbed to his injuries at a local hospital. After an hours-long manhunt, Forsyth County Sheriff’s Office announced that they’d apprehended the suspect, who was also a student at Mount Tabor High. His identity has not been released. During the chaos at the school, another student suffered a seizure, though their condition is unknown.
Christopher Johnson, whose son attends the school, said that his child and other students hid in the gymnasium once they heard the gunshots and realized that an active shooter was near.
North Carolina is grappling with its second school shooting in two days. On Monday, a 15-year-old shot a fellow student during a fight at Wilmington High School. Thankfully, that victim suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The student killed today in the shooting at Mt Tabor HS is William Chavis Raynard Miller Jr. Our thoughts and prayers are with his family today and in the difficult days to come.
